The Reason For a One Hour Lesson

For the first part of the lesson, I teach violin technique (how to hold the violin, the bow, position the feet and body), and then how to play looking at the movement of the arm, the movement of the bow. I then teach how to read music, and other aspects of music theory.  At the end of the lesson, we discuss the parent readings for a few minutes and there is a moment for questions about what was learned or about how practicing is going at home. For the more advanced student, we will work on vibrato, scales, etudes, sightreading, positions, technique, review and new pieces (solo and orchestra), and theory.

The Reason For Starting on the Box for Very Young Children

For the very young student, the box violin allows the student to perfect the bowhold first, as well as develop the muscles on the left side of the body needed to support the weight of the violin. This also allows the student to focus on learning 6 different rhythms, to bow those rhythms at 6 different tempos (from slow to fast), to position the feet correctly, to develop practice skills, and gives a greater incentive to achieve the eventual purchase of the violin. This can take anywhere from 2 months to a year, depending on how often the student is practicing.
